FREQUENT QUESTIONS

WHY Ximénez

AND NOT Jiménez?

The family name is Jimenez, and the brand has been evolving along with the company. When the company reached the scale that now characterizes it, it wanted to adapt the brand and played with the pronunciation of "x" in many languages as a guttural sound, and from there, we made the X our label.

WHEN AND HOW THE COMPANY WAS SET UP?

The activity began in 1945 within the field of lighting and electricity. Founded by Francisco Jiménez Carmona, father and grandfather of the current members of the Board of Directors.

Is Ximénez devoted also to distribution?

The business group has its own distribution channel, Ilméx, created for this purpose in 1998. Ximénez takes charge only of installation project

What is its main advantage over the competition?

Its capability and versatility: capacity in terms of manufacturing, installation, and response; versatility in terms of design, delivery time, and also installation, given the innovation we bring to our projects not only in design but also in the way we install the motifs

Who does the designs?

Our design team creates all kinds of motifs or compositions adapted to any context. However, some customers often have their own designs which our technical and design departments tailor to the requirements of the materials. For certain projects, such as Madrid, Malaga and Barcelona, we have the collaboration of prestigious designers and architects of international fame who bring their style and trends to lighting.

Which are the basements of your commitment to sustainable development?

From the internal point of view, Ximénez has its own quality and environmental policies for each of the processes involved in its activities in favor of the sustainable development and respect for the environment.

By incorporating LED technology in its projects in 2002, Ximénez invited its clients to take part in this commitment by taking advantage of this type of lighting

What is the secret to continue growing in the third generation of the company?

The passion for enlightenment is the basis of this success. Besides, it is also important to continue innovating in materials, technologies, without neglecting the ultimate goal of decorating by means of lighting with the total satisfaction of the clients.

Which four adjectives could describe the company?

Pioneering, innovative, serious and professional

You are specialized in large structures, how do you succeed to be such efficient in installation with these dimensions?

Indeed, one of our specialties is the manufacture and installation of large structures (gateways, galleries, trees). To maintain our efficiency, cleanliness, security and order in the installation work, we have developed a system that allows a system based on modules that allow to assemble and connect each piece almost immediately

WHY LIGHTING?

Currently the decorative lighting is not conceived as an independent tool for municipalities to "decorate" cities to mark certain dates served. Decorative lighting is included within the municipal street lighting strategy and share the same principles and objectives: promoting urban, social and economic development of the city; consider and reduce environmental impacts; and reduce energy consumption.

Generating employment, encouraging commercial activity, catering, and tourism and, as a result, boosting consumption and city incomes, all these points constitute the main objective of decorative lighting. Furthermore, lighting promotes citizens relationships since it welcomes them to enjoy the city itself and folk and summer festivals with a long history behind, and it becomes one of the most recognised and accepted initiatives by the citizens and one of the main attractions of the city. Needless to say nobody would like to go shopping in a sad and sober environment on Christmas without been dressed up with the typical decorative lights or livened up with our typical Christmas songs. For example, let’s consider the impact of decorative lighting on some of the cities which go more for decorative lighting. In Madrid, for example, according to records registered by the municipal barometer of consumption, Christmas lighting was the most popular initiative among the city’s inhabitants in 2010, with an impact of the 99.26%. Throughout the thirty days this event lasts, the number of visitors kept in increasing until it reached its record figure in December with more than 615,000 travellers and near 1.2 millions of hotel overnights. Andalusian cities like Malaga, Costa del Sol’s capital city, or Jerez de la Frontera, welcome to their summer festival (feria) more than one million visitors every year even if it takes places in August, as it happens in Malaga.

Decorative lighting is then not an expense but an investment: stimulates demand, grants a respite to traders who, beset by economic crisis and lack of sales, see on the Christmas lighting a special appeal to consumers; and encourages an increase in hotel and restaurant reservations and use of urban transport, especially the taxi route to enjoy the lighting, thanks to the increasingly active Christmas tourism. In short, the city is moving.

Other basics premises within a city lighting strategy are, besides, the constant reduction of the lighting environmental impact and of the electrical consumption.

In decorative lighting, these aims are achieved by developing much more efficient designs and by improving and fully implementing LED technology as the unique lighting system. Thus, savings are produced not only on the electrical bill, but also on CO2 emissions to the atmosphere, helping to fight against climate change. Going back to Madrid’s example, CO2 emissions to the atmosphere was reduced more than 130 tons in 2010 (from 230 tons released in 2009 to only 98 tons in 2010)

Some cities have chosen to bring forward Christmas lighting in order to foster trade and encourage local consumption or, as some professionals say, to make people happier. Multiple are the effects that the colourful lighting can have on citizens.

María Jesús Echániz, a member of the College of Psychologists of Extremadura (Spain), explains as follows the influence of the Christmas lighting in the population: “We know that sensory, existential or experiential, marketing, based on stimulation of the senses, encourages the purchase and thus, to a world full of feelings and emotions that create shared rewarding experiences. The professionals dedicated to this trend agree that sensory stimulation (visual, lighting, colours, sounds, smells and shapes) accrue desire to buy “.

Sensations play a key role in the purchasing process for consumers and increase retail sales. Christmas lights turn on emotions and evoke happy memories of our childhood, cheering the saddened population up. Memories that we must continue to cultivate in order to not deprive our children of all illusion, magic and feelings about Christmas, especially if we look back and remember our childhood at that time

Lighting and health are related. It is shown that a chronic lack of lighting may cause depression.

In autumn and winter there is an increase of depression and anxiety attacks by the lack of natural light which is known as the Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD). The great influence of broad-spectrum lighting in the brain’s neurotransmitters modifies stress levels, moods and behaviors, altering human health and affecting job performance.

In autumn and winter, people tend to wear dark colours and enjoy less the sunlight, either because there is little, or because they prefer to stay at home or another enclosed environment. All this leads to depression and, again, to shun going outside.

Under these circumstances, decorative lighting suggests the opposite: streets are decorated, which invites people to go out and increases the quality, quantity and colour of the light that illuminates our cities.

In addition to the amount of illumination, we are also affected by light colour. Bright and intense colours positively motivate us, building morale and thus improving our overall health.

PRODUCTS

Iluminaciones Ximénez offers its clients to develop customised projects for their cities and for a specific event, without limiting the decoration to standard referenced motifs which globalise  all decorations by losing the identity of each city, area or region. .

To do that, design and manufacturing become especially important.

Thanks to the application of the latest computing technologies, the Technical Department adapts all designs perfectly according to the manufacturing requirements. At this stage, we need to emphasize that Iluminaciones Ximénez is the main manufacturing company of big structures at an European level.

The particular Andalusian festivals allow us to produce gateways of 140 meters wide by 50 meters height, and giant trees up to 64 meters, inside which you could even walk, have also been manufactured. All made to measure projects are manufactured under the close surveillance of our technicians and engineers, and in constant contact with the customers to achieve the desired result. The strict quality control which each piece undergoes guarantees the feasibility and safety of the product and, by extension, of the installation.

Needless to say that all production integrates the last improvements in LED technology in the different formats specifically designed by our Innovation + Development team for this activity as far as shape, intensity and light projection angle are concerned. If we compared LED technology with the traditional incandescent lights, besides its longer durability, hit resistance and less maintenance required by LED, its main advantage is the reduction on energy consumption and on CO2 emissions in approximately an 80%. Among the different LED manufacturers, ILUMINACIONES XIMÉNEZ integrates in its products the best LEDS in the market such as CREE, Nichia and Neo Neon, selected one by one in order to guarantee the same colors and intensity even in different production batches.

SERVICES

ILUMINACIONES XIMÉNEZ is the leading European company in artistic and decorative lighting installation. And the fact is that in the projects carried out by ILUMINACIONES XIMÉNEZ, the exclusivity is not coming only by the product, but also by its installation.

In the headquarters, Iluminaciones Ximénez, with the collaboration of the subsidiary company Ilméx, carries out the design, technical development and manufacturing of all motifs and products that would be later installed in different cities

STORAGE AND LOGISTICS

Safety, cleaning and order are the main qualities of our workers, for which it is necessary to always have the material ready and count on the adequate logistics capacity required by the magnitude of these works.

A classification system based on references according to the shapes and controlled by radio frequency enables an organized and precise storage of the motifs. Thanks to this system, our workers can quickly find the motifs to prepare the material outputs with full diligence and to punctually meet the commitments undertaken with our customers.

Actually this logistics capacity is the main force of Iluminaciones Ximénez. More than 150 vehicles, including tractors, mobile electric transformation centers, rigid trucks, tractor units, vans with and without cranes, lifting platforms, enable this company to undertake this kind of great installation projects with punctuality, safety and guaranty in record time

INSTALATION

Far away from the traditional installation of column and across street motifs, ILUMINACIONES XIMÉNEZ has innovated with cross, parallel installations, and created entire light screens by means of hanging motifs. Being expert on installing giant structures, we count on a modulation system of the pieces that allows a very easy assembling, which speeds up the process and prevents from interrupting the traffic or the pedestrian circulation more time than it is needed.

The Innovation and Development Department works upon the innovation axiom, but not only innovation in products, but also in installation and in the integration of the most avant-garde materials from the point of view of safety, design, technology and environmental respect. An example of the research and developments in installations are the patents of pole insulators, special tensors and special cable clamps.

URBAN LIGHTING

From the offices in Málaga, Iluminaciones Ximénez also addresses the conservation of street lighting, comprising all the tasks of preventive and immediate actions for public lighting of streets and squares with the effectiveness of 100% of lights on.

From the inspection of control and measurement centres to the lamp itself (including pipelines, diversion boxes, electrical conductors, electrical and mechanical protection), this business requires attention 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

In case any incident happens preventing the system from working properly, we must act immediately: incidents like replacements, cable theft, accidental fires, etc.

The joint venture began to operate on 7/3/1994, in particular in the districts of Malaga (Spain): Bailén – Miraflores, Ciudad Jardín, Palma – Palmilla, Puerto de la Torre, Campanillas et Churriana, and it is currently in charge of 19 116 points of light, according to the contract signed with the municipality of Malaga.

It currently has 5,000 m2 facilities, a staff of 30 people, 6 trucks with forklift basket, 2 vans with forklift basket, four vans and a private vehicle.
